“We are not planning anything in advance. We know that we have arguments, a clear and understandable position,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Rossiya-24 TV channel upon his arrival in Alaska, where the summit will take place. He added that they would make their arguments clear.
Significant groundwork had been laid during the visit of Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, to Russia, he noted. “We hope to continue this very useful conversation tomorrow.”
Putin and Trump are scheduled to meet in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said the meeting will begin with a one-on-one session involving only the two leaders and their interpreters, followed by expanded talks joined by five delegates from each side.
Ushakov said the talks will focus on resolving the Ukraine crisis, as well as addressing “broader tasks for ensuring peace and security, and current and most pressing international and regional issues.”
At the Alaska summit, President Putin will be accompanied by three ministers and two advisors to the Kremlin leader:
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (1950), who has headed the diplomatic portfolio since 2004 and has handled all the international conflicts involving the Putin administration.
Finance Minister Anton Siluanov (1963) has led the ministry since 2011, when he replaced Alexei Kudrin.
Defense Minister Andrei Belousov (1959), who replaced Sergei Shoigu in 2024, triggering a wave of arrests of high-ranking military personnel in corruption cases, mostly from before the start of the special military operation in Ukraine in 2022.
Kiril Dmitriev (1975), a former Goldman Sachs banker, is the director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and best known as one of the main negotiators with the United States. Residential consultant Yuri Ushakov (1947), who has held the post since 2012, served as ambassador to the United States for nearly ten years.
